Clerical – Routine administrative work generally performed in an office or office-like setting, such as data entry, filing, typing, mail sorting and distribution, and other general office tasks.

Foreign National – A non-U.S. citizens living and residing outside of the United States.

Form DS-2019 – The Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status. A program participant is issued the form DS-2019 by his or her program sponsor. This form is required to apply for a J-1 visa.

Form DS-7002 – A new State Department form, the "Training/Internship Placement Plan" or "T/IPP", which describes the specific goals and objectives of the training/internship program, the skills, knowledge or techniques to be imparted to the trainee or intern, the methods of performance evaluation and supervision, the methodology of training and a chronology or syllabus,  including the tasks, activities and learning outcomes for the programs. This form is required to apply for a J-1 trainee or intern visa.  The DS-7002 must be completed and signed by the trainee or intern, by the host organization, and by the sponsor organization, prior to the issuance of the DS-2019.  A copy of the DS-7002 is provided to both the Host Organization and to the trainee or intern, and may be requested by the Consular Officer during their visa interview.

Hospitality and Tourism Programs – Any internship or training programs in the food, lodging, recreation or travel services industries, primarily related to positions in restaurants, hotels or resorts.

Host Organization – A business, institution, governmental, or non-governmental entity in the United States that conducts training or internship programs on behalf of designated program sponsors pursuant to an executed written agreement between the two parties.

Intern – A foreign national who enters the United States to participate in a structured and guided work-based internship program in his or her specific academic field AND who is either currently enrolled in and pursuing studies at a degree- or certificate-granting post-secondary academic institution outside of the United States OR graduated from such an institution 12 months prior to his or her exchange program start date.

Post-secondary – Refers to certificate or degree-granting institutions which provide academic training beyond the secondary or high school (grade 12) level.

Sponsor Organization or Program Sponsor – An entity, such as AIPT, which has been designated by the U.S. Department of State to conduct educational and cultural exchange programs pursuant to goals of the Fulbright-Hays Act and the relevant legislation. Program Sponsors may be designated in one or more of the 13 categories of the J-1 visa.  Training and intern sponsors may be designated to provide training in one or more of the permitted 11 occupational categories.

Trainee
 – a foreign national who enters the United States to participate in a structured and guided work-based training program in his or her specific occupational field AND who has either a degree or professional certificate from a foreign post-secondary academic institution and at least one year of prior related work experience in his or her occupational field acquired outside the United States; OR five years of work experience outside the United States in his or her occupational field.
