Ask AIPT

Ask AIPT is an interactive tool created to answer questions about the J-1 visa and our programs. AIPT can only answer questions regarding the J-1 visa, as that is our area of expertise.

A question that AIPT will answer:
After an exchange visitor receives his J-1 visa, when can he enter the United States?

A question that AIPT will NOT answer:
What visa can I transfer to after my J-1 training program is over so I can remain in the United States?

Q: Am I allowed to travel outside of the United States while I am on my J-1 program?
A: Yes, you are permitted to exit and re-enter the country during your program. Prior to leaving, you must submit your original DS2019 to AIPT for travel validation. An AIPT representative will sign your form in the travel validation portion. This signature is valid for one year and can be used for multiple trips. If your program is longer than one year and you plan to travel again, you must re-submit your form for a second signature.

Q: The end date on my DS2019 is different from the end date on my J-1 visa. Which date is correct?

A: The official dates of your training program, and the dates you can legally remain and train in the United States, are the dates on your DS2019 form. Sometimes, for unknown reasons, U.S. Consulates issue J-1 visas with expiration dates that are different than the final training date as indicated on the DS2019. In your case, you are legally permitted to remain and train in the United States until the end date on your DS2019. However, if you wish to travel outside of the country in between the expiration date of your visa and your final training date on your DS2019, you will have to visit a U.S. Consulate abroad to have your visa extended or renewed. This is the only way that customs will allow you to enter the United States again.
