Through the J-1 visa camp counselor category, international candidates are permitted to enter the United States for four months during the summer where they will work as camp counselors in approved camps. As the program sponsor, AIPT will recruit interested candidates from around the world. AIPT will also locate camps in the United States who are interested in international camp counselors. The exchange visitors will then be matched with the camps prior to entering the United States. The camp counselor visa category can only be used during the summer in the United States for a maximum of four months. The visa cannot be extended beyond that time.
A camp counselor is an international candidate who:
  • is at least 18 years of age AND
  • is a bona fide student, youth worker or teacher
    OR
  • has specialized skills or experience related to a camp counselor position
The camp counselor category of the J-1 visa can only be used specifically for counselors. If a camp needs additional support staff (i.e.: janitors, cooks, etc.), these positions can be filled with exchange visitors on the summer work/travel category of the J-1 visa.
