J-1 Visa : Teacher

AIPT is designated by the U.S. Department of State to sponsor six categories of the J-1 visa: trainee, intern, summer work & travel, teacher, camp counselor and Korea WEST. Through the J-1 visa teacher category, qualified international candidates are given the opportunity to travel to the United States where they will be placed in a teaching position with an accredited primary or secondary school for up to 3 years.

A teacher is an international candidate who:
  • meets the qualifications for teaching in primary or secondary schools in his/her country of nationality or last legal residence
  • has a minimum of 3 years of teaching or related professional experience
  • satisfies the teaching standards of the U.S. state in which he/she will teach
  • seeks to come to the United States for the purpose of full-time teaching in a primary or secondary accredited school AND
  • is of good reputation and character
AIPT primarily sponsors teaching programs in private schools throughout the United States. There may be the opportunity to teach in a public school, but this will be decided on a case-by-case basis. The duration of each teaching program will be determined by the hosting school; however, the program cannot exceed 3 years.
  • School: The school must be an accredited primary or secondary school offering a position in grades Kindergarten through 12 only.
  • Written Offer: The primary or secondary school in the United States must make a formal, written offer to the international candidate regarding the teaching position
  • Salary: The U.S. school must pay the international candidate a salary that is comparable to what an American teacher with the same qualifications would be paid
